It consists of anupright piston standing 18 ft. high. Over this is fitted a longcylinder with an outside diameter of 18 ins. The cylinder isweighted down with weights, according to the pressure it is de-sired to maintain. Should the cylinder fall below a predetermined height,more steam is admitted to the pump. In case the pump in ser-vice fails for any reason, the piston, by fallinga few inches further, will admit steam to thesecond pump.
