The underground city of Mazikoy,( or "Mazi"), Cappadocia, Turkey
There are more than 100 underground cities in Cappadocia, 37 of them are open. In some cases they are really huge, in some of them, once upon a time, more than could live inside for periods of several months. The most "touristic" ones, are those of Derinkuyu (in greek, "Μαλακωπή"= "Malakopi") and Kaymakli, well organized, with good lighting, and quite easy to cross. Even Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, are not suggested to those who suffer from claustrophobia, there are some really narrow tunnels to pass, if you want to go down 5 "floors". But if you really want to live an unforgettable adventure, feel a little bit like Indiana Jones, then you have to go to Mazikoy. It's probably the largest underground city by far, going down 10 floors and covering a large area. It's not organized for tourists, so you will avoid the crowds for sure, there's a good chance that you 'll enjoy the tour, by yourself and the guide. There is a guide there, Mr. Ihsan who is a not just a guide, is more than a guide, he is also an "actor" and a "director". He will really make feel how living underground was really like, the tour becomes more like a happening, ,. It was the best tour I had in my life. But, Mazikoy is not for the faint hearted! You 'll have to climb up & down, through vertical tunnels, up to 15m tall, sometimes tight with a rope.
