Formica polyctena nest, sun-basking red wood ants in early spring
In the early spring, when the sun is shining on the red wood ants' ( Formica polyctena) nest, you can see many thousands of sun-basking ants clustering on the nest's surface. The ants' body is warmed up by the sun and contribute to heat up the nest when the ants return.
