Anaemia. 84 year old man exhibiting anaemia caused by radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Anaemia is a condition characterised by very pale skin and dark circles around the eyes, in which the blood has a reduced capacity to transport oxygen to the tissues of the body. It is usually caused by a low concentration of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule inside red blood cells. Haemoglobin cannot be made without iron, so an iron deficiency in the diet is the most common cause of anaemia.
