Galaxy cluster Abell 1060. Infrared composite image of the galaxy cluster Abell 1060, also called the Hydra cluster. More than 100 galaxies are clustered toward the southern constellation Hydra. Most of the stars in these galaxies are cool, old stars. The two very bright stars are in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Infrared can peer through the dense dust that obscures millions of stars from sight at visible wavelengths. These images were made as part of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project using ground based telescopes in the USA and in Chile. The project began in 1997 with the aim of surveying the entire sky with near-infrared.
