This initial part ofthe cleaning should be performed on bothsides of the mouth, above and below, afterwhich the teeth should receive attention. The bristles of the brush are placedupon the buccal cusps of the teeth (seeFig. 2) in such a manner and with suf-ficient force as to divide the bristles and cleaning the surfaces to the contact efforts should be made toreach the distal surfaces of the thirdmolar, or the last tooth in the arch (seeFig. 3), as often at this point a corneris found favorable for the retention offood. The lingual surfaces should betreated in the same manner and withsimilar perseverance. These surfaces areoften neglected, as is noticed in mouthsthat are otherwise clean. This method of cleaning the mouthwhen demonstrated to patients impressesthem with its effectiveness. The brushso used will show a marked wearing awayof the central rows of bristles, showing ithas adapted itself to the teeth. D
