's Cathedral, built 1858-78 in the Neo-Gothic style, is both a parish church and seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Renovated 1927-31 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976, the cathedral accommodates 2200 people and its spires rise 100 metres (330 feet) above street level. It occupies an entire city block, its east side facing 5th Avenue, between 50th and 51st Streets. When newly built, it lay far north of the populous areas of New York.
