Lupus erythematosus. Close-up of the chin of a patient affected by a facial rash known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). SLE, which is regarded as an autoimmune disease, produces a red, blotchy rash of various severity. Although a mild form of the disease affects only the skin, SLE causes a chronic inflammatory disease of connective tissue that can affect other internal organs. Sufferers feel ill, fatigue, fever, nausea, loss of appetite and joint pain. There may be anaemia, kidney failure and arthritis. Blood tests confirm the diagnosis. Treatment aims to reduce inflammation, including use of corticosteroid drugs.
