The 'John Downie' Crab Apple is a cultivar of th Wild Crab. They are widely planted and their fruit ripen to a bright reddish-orange. They are delicious to eat, unlike the Wild Crab, that remains green on the tree and is sour to eat. But both are widely used for making jellies and preserves and are obviously important food for birds and mammals in the wild.
