View NW of Tewkesbury Abbey, England, UK, showing the S transept, the Norman nave & W front of 1123, the central tower of c 1150, & the E end rebuilt in the C14th. The abbey was founded in 715 by Dodo, a Saxon lord, on a site occupied in the C7th by the hermit Theokus. The present church was consecrated on 23 October 1123, the Norman W front, nave & tower survive, but the chancel was entirely remodelled in the Decorated style in the mid-1300s by Hugh Dispenser & his wife Elizabeth Montacute. Lancastrian soldiers seeking sanctuary in the church after the Battle of Tewkesbury (4 May 1471) were murdered by Yorkists.
