A treatywas then concluded againstFrance with Charles and withthe pope. Butthe papal andim-perial forces had already driventhe French out of Milan. Theexultation of Leo was un-bounded. In the hour of hiatriumph he was seized with amortal illness. Upon the deathof the pontiff, Wolsey aspired to the papal chair. The election fell upon cardinal Adrian, a Belgian, whohad been the preceptor of the emperor, and was now his viceroy in May, 1522, Charles again visited England, and remained with Henry five.
