Colostomy and parastomal hernia. Close-up of the abdomen of a 79-year-old female patient with a colostomy bag and parastomal hernia. This colostomy was put in place following Hartmans procedure for bowel cancer. Ostomy bags provide a means for the collection of bodily waste from a surgically diverted biological system, such as the colon (colostomy), ileum (ileostomy) and urinary system (urostomy). A hernia occurs when an organ, such as a loop of the intestine, protrudes from a weak area in the body wall. Here the colon has protruded through the stoma (hole) in the abdominal wall.
