A shop front wall decorated with locally produced hand painted murals and ceramic tiles in Quimper, located in the province of Brittany of north-western France Each piece of china is entirely decorated by hand and signed by the artist. It is the only producer of crockery in France to use this method. The artists who work there today, apply images of Breton characters or of the sea. Quimper has been a pottery town since the days when the area was part of the Roman Empire. Eventually settled by Celts from what is now Wales, Brittany did not officially become part of France until 1532, relatively late by European standards, and thus, it has retained its Celtic heritage. Today, the town has become virtually synonymous with its pottery.
