The planned European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is under construction on top of the Cerro Amazones mountain in the Atacama Desert, Chile. When completed, this optical/infrared telescope will have a diameter primary mirror, the largest on Earth, and will be used to study extrasolar planets, super-massive black holes and dark matter. The contract for its construction was signed at a ceremony in Germany on 25th May 2016. Photographed in 2012.
