Heart ultrasound scan. Nurse using an ultrasound scanning machine to study a patient's heart. This technique, also known as echocardiography, uses ultrasound to detect the heart's structure. High frequency sounds waves are sent out and received by a transducer placed on the patient's chest. The differential reflection of the sound waves by the heart provides an echo map that can be used to diagnose defects including congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy.
