And yet the fortswere hardly marred: scarce a dent can be discovered in theiroutlines from this terrific storm of iron. Commodore Barron,when told that we had not lost a man in the engagement, couldhardly credit the statement, having thought that the takingof these forts would cost us thousands of lives, and it wouldhave if the turf could have prevented shells from droppinginside the walls.
