The 80 horse-power engine worksa wheel of 28 feet diameter, with float-boards 5^ feet by 5feet, and moving with a velocity of 6 feet per second onthe average, when the engine has its full dip; and conse-quently the sectional area of the blades lifting the water is27|- feet. The quantity discharged per second is 165 cubicfeet, or about 4| tons, raised 5 feet in height. On the bank of the Old Bedford river, which empties intothe Ouse at Salters Lode Sluice, is the Manea and WalneaDistrict Engine. It drains B 3 10 MACHINERY AND IMPLEMENTS FOR MACHINERY AND IMPLEMENTS FOR DRAINAGE. 11 86S5 acres, the cost of coals being 7d. per acre. TheSutton and Mepal Engine is built a little higher up on thesame bank, and throws its water into a canal called theCounter Drain, which empties itself into the Bedford is 80 horse-power; the diameter of the wheel being32 feet, and the width of the lodes 4 feet, making 3i revo-lutions per minute. It drains about 10,348 acres, at a costof 7 Id. per acre for fuel, &c. The District Drainage Tax isfrom 4s. to 6s. per acre. Fig. 3 represents a section of the bank, and the arrange-ments for driving the scoop-wheel, erected at Loch Eoyle,by Joseph Gibbs, Esq. The wheel in this case was con-structed of wrought iron, and was 18 feet in diameter. The engines are usually provided with three boders; a40 horse engine has three boilers of 30 horse-power each, two being used while one is being cleansed or repaired.
