(Fig. 35.) An alternating current of the samefrequency as the primary, but higher in voltage and lower in amperageis generated in the secondary of the transformer, and passes into thecondenser, which acts as a reservoir. This Tesla coil is the same as an induction coil ( Figs. $2 and33), except that some inert substance, instead of soft iron, is used forthe core. The secondary current of the second coil is the one supplied by themachine, the one to be used to generate X-rays. Like the current of theRuhmkorft, or induction coil, this current is high in voltage and low inamperage. The current of the induction coil is. however, practically auni-directional one, while the current supplied by the high-frequency coilis alternating at the inconceivably high frequency of tens of thousandsor millions.
