The England flag proudly displayed on St George's Day outside a picturesque house bathed in sunshine at Bayard's Cove, Dartmouth

The cottage stands next to Bayard's Cove Fort, built in around 1540 in the reign of Henry VIII as a last line of defence to protect the people of Dartmouth and the rest of England from foreign invaders. Cannons stuck out from the gun ports, ready to fire at enemy ships should they get past the two castles guarding the entrance to the inner harbour. In the end the soldiers manning the artillery fort were never called into action and eventually abandoned it. Visitors today can walk inside and glimpse views of the River Dart through the gun ports.
