An Italian rapier with an etched hilt, circa 1600. Slender thrusting blade of diamond section. The base of the blade is stamped "IHS" in the short narrow fullers on both sides. The ricasso is engraved with decorative lines and bears double stamped cross marks on each side. Iron swept hilt (light pitting) covered entirely with decorative tendril etching showing vestiges of gilding. Original grip cover with iron wire winding and Turk's heads. A flat pommel with two holes, etched vine decoration, and a bird displayed on the reverse side. Length 122 cm. historic, h,
