Guanaja Island, from space. North is at top. Sea is blue, vegetation is green and exposed earth is brown. This island is located off the north coast of Honduras, in the western Caribbean Sea. It is one of the Bay Islands, a group of volcanic islands that form part of the Bonacca Ridge. In the past, these islands supported a large tourist industry, attracted by the abundant coral reefs surrounding the islands. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated the region, causing massive damage to infrastructure and destroying the island's mangrove habitats. Subsequent soil erosion has impacted on its coral reef environments. Photographed from the International Space Station on 1st March 2007, during Expedition 14.
