The seine isgenerally one hundred yards in length, and from four to six feet inwidth, varying according to the depth of the water. One edge of theseine is heavily loaded with lead, while the other has numerous corks. SHAD FISHING IX THE StJSQUEHANXA. or wooden buoys, so that it floats in the water in an upright seine is carried two or three hundred yards above the fishing bat-tery, when one end is taken in a boat, which is rowed out from theshore in a circular course, and hauled in at the battery, the other endin the meantime, arriving at the same place. The process of haulingin the seine is represented in the engraving. Shad generally run inschools; and in clear weather, with the aid of a spy glass, their ap-proach may be descried from the battery. The hauls are, therefore,irregular ; but when a school is efiectually surrounded with the seine,an immense number is sure to be captured, as few are able to escapeits delicate net-work.
