He filled various offices inconnection with the movement, and promoted most of its afterdevelopments — Good Templarism, Blue Ribbonism, and LocalOption. At a late period of life, INIr. Charlton entered another sphereof public usefulness. On the ist of November, 1867, he waselected a member of the Town Council of Gateshead; and onthe loth of November, 1873, he was elected Mayor of thatborough, a position which he so well occupied that on the 9thof November, 1874, he was re-elected. On the latter occasion,. ^^^-N^^^A^-^ GEORGE CHARLTOX. while entertained at a public breakfast by his fellow-citizens, theVenerable Archdeacon Prest proposed the following resolution inhis honour:—That the friends of temperance and social progressin Newcastle and surrounding district, impressed with the valuableservices which George Charlton has so long rendered to the temper-ance cause, embrace the occasion of his re-election as ]\Iayor ofGateshead, to publicly express their appreciation of his consistency,earnestness, and devotion. Subsequently Mr. Charlton was made an alderman and a Justiceof the Peace for the borough of Gateshead. While in the activeexercise of the duties belonging to these offices he was attacked byillness, and on the 17th of September, 1885, at his residence in 534 LIONEL CHARLTON. Bensham, he died.
