Mould on an orange. Fluorescence pattern showing mould in an orange undergoing ultraviolet (UV) screening. This process is carried out at packing houses for citrus fruits. Those oranges that display the characteristic 'fluorescence signature' associated with the presence of blue or green mould are culled. Oranges with less-studied patterns, such as blotches (see C021/4931), may also warrant attention. This research was carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture.
