The painting titled Charity by the French artist William Adolphe-Bougereau (1825-1905) is housed in the Birmingham Art Galley. In this monumental work, which was first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1865, Bougereau presents a woman with three children huddled in from of the Church of the Madeleine in Paris. With its strongly centralized, pyramidal composition and low viewpoint, the painting is conceived as an altarpiece, with the mother becoming a kind of secular madonna.
