Gaspard-Felix Tournachon (1820-1910), French balloonist and photographer known by the pseudonym Nadar. Nadar's ballooning exploits included taking the first aerial photographs in the 1850s, and building a large balloon ('Le Geant', The Giant) in 1863. This balloon had a huge size of 6000 cubic metres. Nadar set up his fourth photographic studio in Marseilles in 1895 when in his seventies. He returned to Paris in 1909 and died there the following year. This self-portrait albumen silver print dates from the period 1878 to 1883.
