They are similar to the vaulted, coveredstructures that I have already described in other cities, withthe customary shops, booths, mazy passages, and courtyards forcaravans, but all on a larger scale than elsewhere in opportunities which I found in them for shopping were ex-cellent, but I sought in vain for one object which I wished topurchase; it was a flag with the Persian emblem of the Lionand the Sun. The flag has little significance in Persian patri-otism ; for that reason it is not commonly on sale, so I hadto have the banner made to order. I may add, however, thatit was handsomely painted, and it now hangs in my studyas a memento of my journey to Iran. Regarding the other native edifices in the older part of thecity there is little
