Irritant symbol. Close-up of a warning symbol on a bottle of household bleach. The black cross in an orange square is the internationally recognised symbol representing an irritant chemical. Bleach contains the chemical sodium hypochlorite, which has similar effects to the highly toxic gas chlorine. Bleach contains about 5% sodium hypochlorite. It is used to kill bacteria in areas where they may become a problem.
