It is true that before the establishment of the rec-lamation pknt. many of these bolts and nuts were was a more expensive process, however, because the machineswere scattered at the different shops and were not worked asefficiently as is possible where they are grouped together in onedepartment and have a sufficient amount of work to keep themworking to capacity at all times. In all cases it has been foundpossible to s;;eed up the machines and thus increase the material cost, plus a proper allowance for supervision and over-head expense. AIR BR.\KES .\XD .MR HOSE The main building, which contains the machine shop and thebolt and nut machinery, also has a section for repairing andcleaning air brake apparatus and for working over air and steamhose. The hose and fittings are first stripped with home-madedevices; about 90 per cent of the fittings are practically as goodas new when they have been cleaned and new gaskets have beenapplied. A large number of new bolts and pins are also made fromround iron which is taken from the scrap, straightened and cutto proper lengths. For the heading of these bolts two machinesare used which were reclaimed from scrap.
