An Afghan boy walks along a street past the skeletons of destroyed buildings in the Shor Bazaar (old market) section of Kabul near the Kabul River Afghanistan This part of Kabul and many others were almost completely destroyed in the mid 1990's (1992-1996) in factional fighting between rival mujahideen commanders for control of the capital after the Soviet's withdrawal. Further destruction was inflicted when the Taliban took Kabul in 1996 and when the USA- backed Northern Alliance re-took Kabul in 2001. Located at 1800 meters along the Kabul River and capital of Kabul Province and Afghanistan since 1775 Kabul was a thriving city of 1 million in the late 1970's. Now teeming with refugees returning from Pakistan Iran and other countries the city still lacks much of the basic amenities of life-water electricity sanitation communications.
