Small bitter oranges or Sevillian oranges with pitted skins, are grown in the streets around Cordoba thus creating a pleasant air of orange aroma in Andalusia, southern Spain. Because of its name, the bitter orange has a very bitter and sour taste, not recommended for eating. This citrus fruit is made into jams, English marmalade, essential oils, tea, honey and marinades. The bitter orange is native to Southeast Asia and was first introduced to the Spanish Iberian Peninsula by the invading Moors (Muslim people of North Africa) who settled from 711 AD which was then known as Al-Andalus, (Andalusia) with large-scale cultivation starting in the 10th century.
