David & Gladys Wright House - Kitchen
Famous Architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built a unique home for his son and daughter-in-law, David and Gladys. Located in the Arcadia district of Phoenix, Arizona, the unusual spiral design was a precursor to the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The house itself appears to float on columns providing views of the surrounding desert (at the time of construction in 1950), Camelback Mountain, and the property’s citrus orchard. After David and Gladys passed away, the house fell into disrepair. A new owner planned to demolish the house (ignoring its architectural significance) and it was saved exactly one day before the bulldozers arrived to do their thing. The property was then purchased by Zach Rawling, an attorney from Las Vegas — with plans to restore the home and property in order to make it open to the public. The home is again listed for sale but hopefully will be preserved. I have been lucky to visit the home twice, most recently for an Open House and viewing of sculptures by Jun Kaneko to be auctioned off for the benefit of the home’s preservation. You can view all my photos of the property by searching with the keywords “bdavid, david, wright”. Wandering back to the front of the house, we find the kitchen. I love the big round window with the smaller cutout to allow a breeze to enter.
