A genus of elegant pinnate-leaved Palms, which are widely distributed over the earth, some of the species being found in the East Indies, while others occur in the West. They exist also in the islands of Mau- ritius and its dependencies, in the island of Madagascar, in New Zealand, and in Aus- tralia. The genus Areca is characterized by its branching spadix and double spathe, which fully encloses the flowers; these latter are unisexual, but borne upon the same spike, the female blooms having six rudimentary stamens, while the male flow- ers have a six-cleft perianth; fruit one- seeded. A. Baueri (Seaforthia. robusta). A - fine Australian Palm, not very hardy in this climate, except under glass. Large plants, $ each. A. rubra. A fine plant for the decoration of apartments, or any situation where a graceful plant is required. The leaves are pinnate and arching, in a young state bright red, changing with age to dark green. Native of the East Indies; not hardy out of doors, but, as stated above, very desirable for house decoration. Large plants, $ each. BRAHEA. A genus of low- growing Palms, with fan-shapad leaves, and of fine appearance. B. dulcis. The stem of this plant i s some- what stout, and takes a long time to develop. The leaves are nearly circular, plaited and of bright green col- or; it is a mucta- esteemed and justly valued Palm for decora tive uses.' Na tiv
