People sit under blossoming cherry trees at Sakura Park in Vilnius. Sakura Park was established in 2001 to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who served as vice-consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania. During the Second World War, Sugihara helped about 6,000 Jews from Lithuania, Poland and Germany flee Europe by issuing them transit visas so they could travel through Japanese territory.
