Prince Okuninushi and the Hare

In Japanese legend, there was once a great flood in the province of Inaba, and a hare was washed down on a floating piece of wood until it reached an island in the Sea of Japan. Wishing to return to Inaba, the hare asked a crocodile it met whether there were more hares or crocodiles. The crocodile answered crocodiles. The hare replied that all the crocodiles should line up and then be counted, When the crocodiles did so, the hare jumped from back to back and was on the last one, which was just at Inaba, when it was flipped by the crocodile and then skinned as the crocodiles realized that they had been taken. Prince Okuninushi, the lord of Inaba, came by at the time and cured the hare. This 1949 illustration shows the prince taking pity on the hare and helping him.
