This is one of many similar condi-tions the author has seen on the back of the hand. They all haveabout the same history in common, starting, as a rule, from a littlescaly excrescence, which continues to get larger and larger untilthe destruction of the hand or the life of the patient is seen in the first stage a few x-ray treatments will usually re-move these conditions, but, when allowed to continue to a later date, surgery or caustic applications will be necessary to remove the massof abnormal tissue, after which the x-ray should be used duringthe stage of Fig. 123.—Epithelioma of the neck. Fig. 123 illustrates a very deceptive variety of skin cancer. Thisman had long had a dry scaly patch on the back of his neck that wasmore or less painful and tender to the touch, but he thought it wasonly a trifling affair and paid no attention to it. A few weeks be-fore he was seen the horny growth had broken down, and an ulcerabout the size of a 5-cent piece had formed and was causing con-siderable pain. This new condition caused some alarm, and he ap-plied for treatment. On examination it was found that the tissuesaround the ulcer were hard and dense over an area 3 inches in di-ameter. He refused all surgical interference from the start. After 286 PRACTICAL ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS AND X-RAY THERAPY eight x-ray exposures to a medium vacuum tube the epithelium wasdestroyed with caustic po
