Knut the polar bear in Berlin Zoo
Knut became a worldwide celebrity when media covered the story of how he was hand-reared in Berlin Zoo because his mother rejected him at birth. He was born on December 5, 2006 and had his first public appearance in Berlin Zoo on March 23, 2007. Hundreds of thousands of people have come to see him and he has inspired a whole industry of merchandise. The German Environment Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, has adopted Knut to highlight the threat that global warming poses to polar bears living in the wild. In this picture he is just under 15 weeks old.
