Crops on limestonesoils are usually quite free from attack. Clean farminsf, involvinsf the removal and destruc-tion, by burning, of all refuse of the cabbage or turnip THE CLUB ROOT 143 field, together with constant crop-rotation, are the chiefsafeguards against the club root fungus. The only wayto lessen attack is to use preyentive measures ; for whenonce the fungus has obtained a hold upon the plant, itcannot be gotten rid of. It is probable that methods ofpreventing it from attacking seedlings in the hotbed canreadily be found, but few definite experiments on thesubject seem yet to have been made in America. Eng-lish writers assert that if the soil of the seed bed betreated with carbon-bisulphide before the seeds areplanted, the traces of the fungus in the soil will be de-stroyed, and the seedlings escape attack. If many ofthe seedlings in the seed bed show the disease, the wholelot better be pulled up and burn
