Tornado over fields. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that can form during the growth of a cumulonimbus (thunderstorm cloud). Large tornadoes, which form from severe thunderstorms called supercells, can be hundreds of metres across and travel many kilometres before dissipating. Wind speeds of hundreds of kilometres an hour can destroy houses and other objects in their path. This tornado was photographed from a storm-chase vehicle tracking tornadoes in South Dakota, USA, on 6 June 2007.
