In 1866 (probably as a result of the second big fire, which occur-red in the preceding fall) the steamer Neptune was bought at a costof $6,000, and about 1873 Portsmouth and Wenona purchased steamengines. When the waterworks were installed, the engines were notneeded, and were replaced with hose carts. Electric fire alarm boxeswere installed in 1876, which was a great improvement. The chiefengineer was then paid but $300 a year for his services. T. K. Hard-ing, who had been on the force most of the time since about 1867, be-came chief in 1883. The affairs of the department under the manage-ment of Chief Harding have been most satisfactory to all, and to himis largely due the reputation the Bay City Fire Department has wonfor itself outside, that of being one of the ablest and most efficient inthe country.
