General Manuel Belgrano (1770-1820) created the Flag of Argentina and was one of the main Libertadores or leaders of the Latin American Wars of Independence from Spain (Argentina achieving independence in May 1810). The neo-classical Casa Rosada or 'Pink House', dating to the 1880s, is the President's Office and seat of the executive branch of the Government of Argentina. Eva Peron rallied people from its balcony. Its red colour may be a result of President Domingo Sarmiento painting it pink to diffuse political tensions by mixing the red and white colours of the country's opposing political parties. Another theory proposes the paint contained cow's blood to prevent humidity damage.
