Common shrew (Sorex araneus), artwork. This small mammal is widespread throughout northern Europe (except Ireland). It reaches a body length of just over 8 centimetres, and a weight of around 10 grams. It lives for around 23 months, living in woodland, grassland and hedges. It needs to feed every couple of hours, hunting small insects and invertebrates such as spiders and worms.
