Mathematical brain activity. Co-registered EEGs (electroencephalograms) of brain activity during mathematical problem-solving superimposed on horizontal brain scans (grey). EEGs use electrodes attached to the scalp to measure the brain's electrical potential. At left is the brain of a person reciting multiplication tables, while at right the subject is performing repeated subtractions. Active brain areas are orange here. Certain parts of the brain are known to control specific functions. By studying the activities of different areas of the brain, a greater understanding of learning, problem-solving and other cognitive functions may be gained.
