Pahoehoe and A'a lava flows near Chaing of Craters Road, Big Island, Hawaii, USA

Pahoehoe and A'a lava flows near Chaing of Craters Road, Big Island, Hawaii, USA. This is a section of a relatively young pahoehoe and A'a flows on the east rift zone of Kīlauea Volcano in Hawaii,USA. A pahoehoe flow usually advances as a series of small lobes and toes breaking out from a cooled crust. Pahoehoe lava flows long distances in lava tubes with minimum heat loss and low viscosity. The surface texture of pahoehoe is very unique with wide range of bizarre shapes. Once the pahoehoe lava cools or on steep slopes it can become A'a lava with increased viscosity. Pahoehoe lavas typically have a temperature of 1100 to 1200 Celsius, while A'a lava is from 1000 to 1100 Celsius.
