President Buchanan's reception of the Grand Embassy from Japan with a Treaty of Peace and Commerce. It was said to be the first ever ambassadors sent from Japan to a foreign land. General Cass, the secretary of state, received the embassy on Wednesday, May 17, 1860. The book dates to 1876.
