Pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) feeding. This is a large wader and migratory bird whose breeding habitat is in shallow, brackish waters in temperate Eurasia. It migrates to Africa or southern Asia in winter and feeds on crustaceans and insects. This species became extinct in Great Britain in the 19th Century but was successfully recolonised in the 1940's. For this reason it became the logo for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
