Behind each eye there passesoff in a backward direction a tuft of pure white feathers,extremely light and flexible, and three or four inches inlength. The bill is yellowish or flesh coloured ; the legsand claws are approaching to black. The gracefulness of its figure and the elegance of itsdeportment have always rendered this bird an object ofpeculiar attraction. Its manners are gentle and good na-tured, and it speedily becomes familiarized and contentedwith captivity. It is a native of Africa, and is most THE JAB1RU. 237 abundant in the neighbourhood of Tripoli. The environs. of Constantinople are the only part of Europe which it issaid to visit. THE JABIRU. The South American Jabiru is more than four feet high,and is six in length from the tip of the beak to that of theclaws. It has a large black bill above thirteen incheslong, and three in thickness at the base. The head andmost of the neck of this bird are covered with a black andnaked skin, thinly scattered with a few grey hairs. Thegeneral colour of the plumage is white, but about the low-er part of the neck is a large band of beautiful red.
