Kidney dialysis. 70-year-old woman reading a book at home during peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis carries out the normal function of a failing or failed kidney, to remove waste products from the blood. In peritoneal dialysis, the filter used is the patient's own peritoneum (abdominal lining). The dialysis fluid (bags at centre left) enters the abdominal cavity via a tube (running behind book). Waste products from the blood pass across the peritoneum to accumulate in this fluid, which is drained and replaced. The feasibility of this dialysis method depends upon factors such as the patient's remaining kidney function, abdominal capacity and the quality of their peritoneum.
