It was then called The Missouri Re-publican—later the Saint Louis Republican, andin 1888 The St. Louis Republic under whichname it is now published, having recently issuedin 1908 a Centennial edition of exceeding interest,containing 168 pages. The fire department of Saint Louis w^as orga-nized in January 1810, when an ordinance waspassed to draft all free male inhabitants above theage of eighteen years for service as firemen.
