A quarrel broke out between King Edward I and Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, and Marshal of England following the King's extensive military campaigns that required high levels of taxation. Edward met with both lay and ecclesiastical opposition. At the Salisbury parliament of February 1297, Bigod objected to a royal summons of military service argueing that the military obligation only extended to service alongside the King. The King swore that Norfolk must go to Flanders or hang. Norfolk responded that neither would happen and 1500 knights sided with him putting the monarchy in danger.
